Religious Education is given a high priority in Downshire School. All pupils study the subject throughout their five years in key stages 3 and 4. In years 8, 9 and 10, pupils are timetabled for three thirty minute periods of RE each week. In years 11 and 12 pupils are timetabled for two thirty minute periods.
The teaching of RE in Downshire School is in accordance with the terms of the Northern Ireland Statutory Core Syllabus for Religious Education and the Revised Curriculum. Where possible, lessons will be intentionally ‘Bible-based’.
Two courses of study are presently available at Key Stage 4 Level: GCSE RE (Full Course) and GCSE RE (Short Course). The Short Course is generally credited as being equivalent to half of a full GCSE qualification. Pupils following the Full GCSE Course will be timetabled for 5 periods per week.
An understanding of the work of various charities is very important in the RE Department as well as being a requirement of the Core Syllabus. The RE Department plays a very active role in this regard and seeks to develop in pupils an awareness of the needs of others who are less fortunate than themselves.
